Why SA20 2027 Starts Later This Time

The first four seasons started around the New Year. Season 5 moves to mid-January so it doesn’t clash with England’s ODI series in South Africa. The league still keeps its usual size of 34 matches, with four Saturday double-headers on 23 January, 30 January, 6 February and 13 February.

The opening game is a rematch of the Season 4 final. Qualifier 1 will be the first playoff match ever played at Boland Park, and Newlands hosts the final for the second year running.

SA20 2027 Format and Points System

The league stage is a double round-robin. Each team plays the other five twice, home and away, for 10 matches each. The top four go through to the playoffs:

  • Qualifier 1: 1st vs 2nd. The winner goes straight to the final.
  • Eliminator: 3rd vs 4th. The loser goes out.
  • Qualifier 2: Loser of Qualifier 1 vs winner of the Eliminator.
  • Final: Winner of Qualifier 1 vs winner of Qualifier 2.

A win is worth 4 points and a no result 2 points. Teams also earn a bonus point when they win with a run rate 1.25 times higher than their opponent’s. Over a 10-game league stage, those bonus points often decide who finishes in the top two.

SA20 Season 5 Auction Highlights

The Season 5 auction was held in Johannesburg on 7 October 2026. Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals already had full squads, so only four franchises were buying, and 19 players were sold. The salary cap went up to US$2.54 million per team this season.

The top buys of the day:

PlayerTeamPrice
Jason RowlesJoburg Super KingsR2.9 million
Faf du PlessisJoburg Super KingsR2.7 million
Wiaan MulderMI Cape TownR2.6 million
Shimron HetmyerMI Cape TownR1.5 million
Trent BoultMI Cape TownR1.5 million
Kieron PollardJoburg Super KingsR1.5 million
Craig OvertonSunrisers Eastern CapeR1.5 million
Andries GousJoburg Super KingsR1.0 million

The biggest story was the young Jason Rowles becoming the most expensive player of the auction. Faf du Plessis also went back to Joburg Super Kings after the franchise had released him. Pretoria Capitals’ last pick of the day was Temba Bavuma at R200,000, and they also bought back Rassie van der Dussen for R500,000.

SA20 2027 Squads: Team-by-Team Preview

Sunrisers Eastern Cape (Defending Champions)

SEC won the title in 2023 and 2024 and then again in 2026, when they beat Pretoria Capitals by six wickets in the final. Their core is still intact: Quinton de Kock, Tristan Stubbs, Marco Jansen, Anrich Nortje, Matthew Breetzke and Adam Milne. They have added Mitchell Marsh and Rishad Hossain, and bought Craig Overton and Nandre Burger at the auction. De Kock was Player of the Series last season with 390 runs, so the top order looks strong again.

Pretoria Capitals

The Capitals were runners-up in 2026 and look like the most explosive side this season. Sourav Ganguly’s squad has Phil Salt and Matthew Short at the top, Dewald Brevis and Sherfane Rutherford in the middle, and Andre Russell as the finisher. Brevis made the first century in an SA20 final last season. Lungi Ngidi and captain Keshav Maharaj lead the bowling, and the auction brought in Bavuma, van der Dussen and Keemo Paul.

Durban’s Super Giants

DSG have a lot of star power: Jos Buttler, Devon Conway, Kane Williamson, Liam Livingstone, Heinrich Klaasen and Sunil Narine, with Aiden Markram as captain and Sam Curran signed before the auction. Kwena Maphaka is their young pace option. The real question is form, because DSG finished fifth in 2026 despite a squad like this.

Paarl Royals

David Miller still captains the Royals, and Joe Root joins as their wildcard. With Azmatullah Omarzai, Sikandar Raza, Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Gudakesh Motie, Paarl have plenty of spin and all-rounders, which suits the slower Boland Park pitch. They also host Qualifier 1, so a top-two finish would give them a home playoff.

Joburg Super Kings

JSK changed the most. Albie Morkel replaces Stephen Fleming as head coach, and the squad was rebuilt at the auction around Jason Rowles, Faf du Plessis, Kieron Pollard, Andries Gous, Blessing Muzarabani and Dayyaan Galiem. They kept Jason Holder (pre-signed), Akeal Hosein, James Vince, Donovan Ferreira and Rilee Rossouw. The Wanderers is the biggest ground in the league and usually high-scoring, so the experience in this batting line-up should help.

MI Cape Town

MI Cape Town won their first title in 2025 but finished last in 2026. Rashid Khan is still captain, with Kagiso Rabada, Corbin Bosch, Nicholas Pooran, Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks around him. At the auction they bought back Trent Boult and Wiaan Mulder and added Shimron Hetmyer. On paper this is a much better balanced team than last season’s.

Players to Watch in SA20 2027

  • Dewald Brevis (Pretoria Capitals): The record R16.5 million buy from the Season 4 auction, who scored a hundred in the final.
  • Quinton de Kock (Sunrisers Eastern Cape): Player of the Series in 2026 and still the most dangerous opener in the league.
  • Jason Rowles (Joburg Super Kings): The most expensive buy of the Season 5 auction, with a lot of expectation on him.
  • Rashid Khan (MI Cape Town): Captain and the main wicket-taking threat on a side that needs a strong season.
  • Heinrich Klaasen (Durban’s Super Giants): One of the best death-overs hitters anywhere, playing at Kingsmead.
  • Ottniel Baartman (Sunrisers Eastern Cape): Took the most wickets in 2026, with 20.

How to Watch SA20 2027 in India

South Africa is 3.5 hours behind India, so the 15:30 SAST start for the opener and the final is 7:00 PM IST, and the night games finish late in the Indian evening. Star Sports and JioHotstar showed SA20 in India last season. The official broadcaster for Season 5 in India hasn’t been confirmed yet, and we will update this post when it is. Tickets for matches in South Africa go on sale from 5 November 2026.

Final Word

Sunrisers Eastern Cape start as the team to beat, as they have in most seasons. Pretoria Capitals’ batting and MI Cape Town’s rebuilt squad should give them a real challenge. Follow StakesOfficial for SA20 2027 match previews, live updates and results all season.
